The Disqualified Round Towers of Ireland

Ballybeg (Co. Cork) – visited 7 August 1998

Crofton Croker mentioned the stump of a round tower close to the thirteenth-century Augustinian friary at Ballybeg, just south of Buttevant. It is obvious that what he had in mind was the well-preserved columbarium standing in the field to the south-east, an interesting medieval structure easily mistaken in the distance for the remains of a round tower.
